Front Range Studio Photo of the Week

Elk herd being tended by a bull
Where did we take it? Moraine Park in Rocky Mountain National Park
What is the subject? A herd of elk with a bull gathered during the rut.
Details, please? Canon EOS R5 with 100-400mm lens at 200mm, f/11, 1/125 sec, ISO 200
How did we get it? The elk rut, or mating season, happens in the fall annually. Moraine Park and Horseshoe Park are two areas where large herds assemble where they can be easily seen. They are most active shortly after dawn and shortly before dusk. The only trick is to have a long enough lens or, as is the case here, the elk are unusually close to the road. We didn't have to extend our telephoto to full length to get this group.
What's so special about it? It's an annual tradition for us to head to the mountains and watch these beautiful elk in their mating ritual. This photo was just before all the "fun" starts, so the does were mostly laying in the field.
